Luminescent and Multifunctional Hybrid Materials

Many rare earth coordination polymers and MOFs show luminescence as intrinsic property derived from f-f- or f-d-transitions of rare earth ions. Thereby, composite materials containing Ln-based coordination polymers combine photoluminescence with properties of other compounds, such as magnetism, leading to possible applications for sensing, energy conversion, dielectric properties etc.

Due to the combination of porosity and photoluminescence, lanthanide-based MOFs are predestined materials for application as sensors, since their emission properties can be influenced by the presence of guest molecules. Thus, these compounds can be used as optical sensor materials, i. e. water detectors.

Reaction of metals and metal salts with organic nitrogen containing ligands leads to formation of porous three dimensional coordination compounds. These substances are called Ln-N-MOFs if they contain rare eath metal ions.

Coordination Polymers

Besides 3D MOFs, including Ln-N-MOFs, formation of 1D polymeric and 2D layer structures can be observed, if suitable linkers are applied.

Thin Films of MOFs and Coordination Polymers

Functional thin films of MOFs and coordination polymers are obtained from novel in-situ coating strategies for film creation via an organic melt approach. Other coating strategies enlarge the field including distinct conditions allowing thin film formation with PVD methods. This includes nanostructured surfaces.

Solvent Free, Extreme and Mechanochemical Synthesis Strategies

Our synthesis strategy involves reaction of a metal or metal salt in a melt of an organic ligand. Electride induced reactions from liquid ammonia are also employed. Furthermore, mechanochemical synthesis is used to apply high amounts of energy in short timeframes.

Thermally Enduring Hybrid Materials

Compared to carboxylate-MOFs, many Ln-N-MOFs exhibit exceptionally high thermal stabilities up to 665 °C.
